Project Crowd sourcing Initiative Lets You Shape an Issue of ME Magazine

Beginning this month, Mechanical Engineering magazine is embarking on a unique 12-month initiative called Project Crowdsourcing. We are empowering our community of readers to tell us what’s important and have that reflected in the pages of the magazine in the form of articles in the December 2011 issue.

The only constraint is that the ideas for articles must be focused on at least one of ASME’s three strategic initiatives. That is, they should be related to energy, engineering workforce development, or global impact and outreach.

Between now and February, we are conducting an online discussion to collect your ideas for articles and themes based on ASME’s three initiatives. Suggestions can be as general or as specific as you like. You can comment on the ideas that others have posted or add your own. [Read more]

+ ECLIPSE Applications Due Jan. 3
The deadline for applications to the Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) is only a few weeks away! Applications for the 2010-2011 internship cycle are due Jan. 3, 2011.

Established in 2006, ECLIPSE is an immersive leadership development program offering early-career engineers the opportunity to participate in a range of exclusive, high-level activities within ASME. The initiative aims to engage, identify and develop potential leaders for ASME by placing early career engineers in highly visible and productive roles within the ASME organization. [Read more]

+ Dilip Ballal Named Pratt & Whitney Visiting Professor in Gas Turbine Engineering
Dilip R. Ballal, Ph.D., ASME Fellow and senior vice president of the ASME Institutes Sector, has been named the first Pratt & Whitney Distinguished Chair (Visiting) Professor in Gas Turbine Engineering for the aerospace engineering department at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, India.

Ballal, who will begin his tenure as Pratt & Whitney Chair Professor in January, is the Hans von Ohain Distinguished Chair Professor and Head of the Energy and Environment Engineering Division at the University of Dayton, Ohio. He is a world-renowned scholar in gas turbine propulsion, combustion and emissions, and alternative fuels. As the Pratt & Whitney Chair Professor, Ballal will provide the intellectual leadership to spearhead an applications-driven and science-based research program in India in the high-tech area of gas turbine engines, according to IISc. For more than 50 years, ASME’s Journal of Applied Mechanics has served the broad community of researchers who are exploring new ways to increase the efficiency of engineering mechanics and their processes.

The e-book, which can be displayed on Amazon’s Kindle portable reader and other Kindle-compatible devices, is now available. A free sample download is also available prior to purchase.

ASME Press selected Hot Air Rises and Heat Sinks as the first in its line of e-books because the title has historically been ASME Press’s best-seller on Amazon.com. The publication, which sells several hundred copies each year through the site, is described as a compendium of myths, mistakes, and lessons learned from practicing engineers in the field of electronic equipment cooling.
